RESUMO

Antibiotics, the persistent organic pollutants, have brought serious pollution to the aquatic environment. Therefore, it is necessary to select rapid adsorbents to remove them from their long-term threat. Herein, the introduction of defects in BN was employed to enhance its surface chemical activity for rapid capture of tetracycline via hydrothermal and calcination methods. The defect content in BN can be controlled by adjusting the volume ratio of ethanol to water. Among them, when the volume ratio of H2O/ethanol is 4/1 (BN-3), BN-3 has the most N defects at 33%, which increases the adsorption rate of h-BN for TC and promotes the adsorption capacity to 302.15 mg g-1, which is due to the introduction of nitrogen defects significantly regulates the electronic structure of BN. The corresponding theoretical calculations confirm that BN with N defects decreases the absorption energy of BN for TC. Additionally, the adsorption removal rate of tetracycline still reached 95.5% after 5 cycles of TC adsorption by BN-3, indicating that the defect-modified BN has good reusability and is beneficial for its use in pollutant adsorption.

RESUMO

Fe(II) regeneration plays a crucial role in the electro-Fenton process, significantly influencing the rate of ·OH formation. In this study, a method is proposed to improve Fe(II) regeneration through N-doping aimed at enhancing the adsorption capacity of the activated carbon cathode for Fe(III). N-doping not only enriched the pore structure on the surface of activated carbon, providing numerous adsorption sites, but also significantly increased the adsorption energy for Fe(III). Among the types of nitrogen introduced, pyridine-N exhibited the most substantial enhancement effect, followed by pyrrole-N, while graphite-N showed a certain degree of inhibition. Furthermore, N-doping facilitated the adsorption of all forms of Fe(III) by activated carbon. The adsorption and electrosorption rates of the NAC-900 electrode for Fe(III) were 30.33% and 42.36%, respectively. Such modification markedly enhanced the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle within the electro-Fenton system. The NAC-900 system demonstrated an impressive phenol degradation efficiency of 93.67%, alongside the lowest electricity consumption attributed to the effective "adsorption-reduction" synergy for Fe(III) on the NAC-900 electrode. Compared to the AC cathode electro-Fenton system, the degradation efficiency of the NAC-900 cathode electro-Fenton system at pH = levels ranging from 3 to 5 exceeded 90%; thus, extending the pH applicability of the electro-Fenton process. The degradation efficiency of phenol using the NAC-900 cathode electro-Fenton system in various water matrices approached 90%, indicating robust performance in real wastewater treatment scenarios. This research elucidates the impact of cathodic Fe(III) adsorption on Fe(II) regeneration within the electro-Fenton system, and clarifies the influence of different N- doping types on the cathodic adsorption of Fe(III).

RESUMO

Highly toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), crucial in inducing apoptosis and ferroptosis, are pivotal for cell death pathways in cancer therapy. However, the effectiveness of ROS-related tumor therapy is impeded by the limited intracellular ROS and substrates, coupled with the presence of abundant ROS scavengers like glutathione (GSH). In this research, we developed acid-responsive, iron-coordinated polymer nanoparticles (PPA/TF) encapsulating a mitochondrial-targeting drug alpha-tocopheryl succinate (α-TOS) for enhanced synergistic tumor treatment. The imidazole grafted micelles exhibit prolonged blood circulation and improve the delivery efficiency of the hydrophobic drug α-TOS. Additionally, PPA's design aids in delivering Fe3+, supplying ample iron ions for chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and ferroptosis through the attachment of imidazole groups to Fe3+. In the tumor's weakly acidic intracellular environment, PPA/TF facilitates pH-responsive drug release. α-TOS specifically targets mitochondria, generating ROS and replenishing those depleted by the Fenton reaction. Moreover, the presence of Fe3+ in PPA/TF amplifies ROS upregulation, promotes GSH depletion, and induces oxidative damage and ferroptosis, effectively inhibiting tumor growth. This research presents an innovative ROS-triggered amplification platform that optimizes CDT and ferroptosis for effective cancer treatment.

RESUMO

Comprehensive optical imaging of the intensity, phase, and birefringent information of the biological sample is important because important physical or pathological changes always accompany the changes in multiple optical parameters. Current studies lack such a metric that can present the comprehensive optical property of the sample in one figure. In this paper, a polarization state synthesis tomography (PoST) method, which is based on the principle of polarization state coherent synthesis and demodulation, is proposed to achieve full-field tomographic imaging of the comprehensive information (i.e., intensity, phase, and birefringence) of the biological sample. In this method, the synthesis of the polarization state is achieved by the time-domain full-field low coherence interferometer, where the polarization states of the sample beam and the reference beam are set to be orthogonal for the synthesis of the polarization state. The synthesis of the polarization state enables two functions of the PoST system: (1) Depth information of the sample can be encoded by the synthesized polarization state because only when the optical path length difference between the two arms is within the coherence length, a new polarization state can be synthesized; (2) Since the scattering coefficient, refractive index and the birefringent property of the sample can modulate the intensity and phase of the sample beam, the synthesized polarization state is sensitive to all these three parameters and can provide the comprehensive optical information of the sample. In this work, the depth-resolved ability and the comprehensive optical imaging metric have been demonstrated by the standard samples and the onion cells, demonstrating the potential application value of this method for further investigation of the important physical or pathological process of the biological tissues.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Vast economic and healthcare status discrepancies exist among regions in China, contributing to different treatment patterns. This study was aimed to investigate the current status of pharmacotherapy for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and outcomes in China and explore the geographic variation in stroke care. METHODS: This study was a multicenter prospective registry study, which collected the data of patients with AIS from 80 hospitals in 46 cities in 2015-2017 across China. Poor functional outcome defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of 3-6 was assessed at 3 and 12 months. Multivariate logistic regression was used. RESULTS: Among 9973 eligible patients, the number of receiving intravenous thrombolysis (IVT), antiplatelet agents, anticoagulants, statin and human urinary kallidinogenase was 429 (4.3%), 9363 (93.9%), 1063 (10.7%), 6828 (74.7%) and 5112 (51.2%), respectively. Multivariable analysis showed IVT use in northeastern was significantly more frequent than in eastern region (OR = 3.17, 95% CI, 2.53-3.99), while the antiplatelets agents use were less frequent (OR = 0.46, 95%CI: 0.38-0.57). The proportions of poor outcomes at 3 and 12 months were 20.7% and 15.8%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed AIS patients from northeastern and central region had significantly lower risk of poor outcome at month 3 and 12 than those from eastern region (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There was a low IVT use and a high antiplatelet agent and statin use for AIS in China. The pharmacotherapy and prognosis of AIS had variation by geographic region. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02470624).

RESUMO

Identifying the underlying catalytic mechanisms of synthetic nanocatalysts or nanozymes is important in directing their design and applications. Herein, we revisited the oxidation process of 4,4'-diamino-3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl (TMB) by Mn3O4 nanoparticles and revealed that it adopted an organic acid/aldehyde-triggered catalytic mechanism at a weakly acidic or neutral pH, which is O2-independent and inhibited by the pre-addition of H2O2. Importantly, similar organic acid/aldehyde-mediated oxidation was applied to other substrates of peroxidase in the presence of nanoparticulate or commercially available MnO2 and Mn2O3 but not MnO. The selective oxidation of TMB by Mn3O4 over MnO was further supported by density functional theory calculations. Moreover, Mn3O4 nanoparticles enabled the oxidation of indole 3-acetic acid, a substrate that can generate cytotoxic singlet oxygen upon single-electron transfer oxidation, displaying potential in nanocatalytic tumor therapy. Overall, we revealed a general catalytic mechanism of manganese oxides towards the oxidation of peroxidase substrates, which could boost the design and various applications of these manganese-based nanoparticles.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is an effective treatment method for knee osteoarthritis. With the development and implementation of enhanced recovery after surgery, UKA is now increasingly performed in outpatient surgical centers. However, there is ongoing debate regarding the safety and effectiveness of performing UKA in outpatient settings. METHODS: The search was performed to retrieve randomized controlled trials and cohort studies on outpatient UKA from PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMbase, CNKI, and WanFangData databases. The search was conducted from the inception of the databases until August 31, 2023. After independent screening, data extraction, and risk of bias evaluation by two researchers, meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 software. RESULTS: A total of eight studies involving 18,411 patients were included. The results showed that the postoperative transfusion rate in the outpatient group was lower than that in the inpatient group [OR = 0.36, 95%CI (0.24, 0.54), p < 0.00001], and the difference was statistically significant. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of readmission rate, reoperation rate, surgical site infection, and periprosthetic fracture. The differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Compared to the traditional inpatient route, the blood transfusion rate for single-condyle replacement in the outpatient operation center is lower, and there is no significant difference in readmission rate, reoperation rate, surgical site infection, and periprosthesis fracture. The outpatient approach to UKA is safe, feasible, and highly satisfactory for patients. However, the results have certain limitations, and a rigorous preoperative complication risk assessment can minimize the risk of UKA in outpatient surgery centers. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: A comparative study of joint amnesia in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty with the direct anterior approach and posterior approach was conducted through a comprehensive evaluation. METHODS: The literature on joint amnesia in postoperative patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty by the direct anterior approach and the posterior approach was systematically searched in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, CBM, Wanfang, and VIP databases from the time of library construction until February 13, 2023. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software after independent searching, screening of the literature, data extraction, and quality assessment of the included studies by two investigators in strict accordance with the guidelines for conducting meta-analyses. RESULTS: A total of one RCT and six cohort studies were included in this meta-analysis. Meta-analysis results indicated that at 1 month postoperatively (MD = 2.08, 95% CI (0.20, 3.96), P = 0.03), 3 months (MD = 10.08, 95% CI (1.20, 18.96), P = 0.03), and 1 year (MD = 6.74, 95% CI (1.30, 12.19), P = 0.02), DAA total hip arthroplasty was associated with better FJS compared to PA at 1 year postoperatively. However, there was no statistical significance in FJS between the two groups at 5 years postoperatively (MD = 1.35, 95% CI (- 0.58, 3.28), P = 0.17). CONCLUSION: Current evidence suggests that the degree of joint amnesia after THA for DAA was not found to be superior to that of PA. Further, these findings require confirmation by including a larger number of high-quality randomized controlled studies. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 3.

RESUMO

Lithium batteries have been widely used in our daily lives for their high energy density and long-term stability. However, their safety problems are of paramount concern for consumers, which restricts their scale applications. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) compensate for the defects of liquid leakage and lower ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes, which have attracted a lot of attention. Herein, a 3D interconnected highly porous structural gel electrolyte was prepared with alginate dressing as a host material, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), and a commercial liquid electrolyte. With rich polar functional groups and (CH2-CH2-O) segments on the polymer matrix, the transportation of Li+ is faster and uniform; thus, the formations of lithium dendrite were significantly inhibited. The cycle stability of symmetrical Li||Li batteries with modified composite electrolytes (SAA) is greatly improved, and the overpotential remains stable after more than 1000 h. Meanwhile, under the same conditions, the cycle performance of batteries with unmodified electrolytes is inferior and overpotentials are nearly 1 V after 100 h. Additionally, the capacity retention of Li||LiFePO4 with SAA is more than 95% after 200 cycles, while those of the others declined sharply. The alginate dressing-based GPEs can greatly enhance the mechanical and thermal stability of PEO-based GPEs, which provides an environmentally friendly avenue for gel electrolytes' applications in lithium batteries.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Iron overload plays an important role in hydrocephalus development following intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). Aquaporin 4 (AQP4) participates in the balance of cerebrospinal fluid secretion and absorption. The current study investigated the role of AQP4 in the formation of hydrocephalus caused by iron overload after IVH. METHODS: There were three parts to this study. First, Sprague-Dawley rats received an intraventricular injection of 100 µl autologous blood or saline control. Second, rats had IVH and were treated with deferoxamine (DFX), an iron chelator, or vehicle. Third, rats had IVH and were treated with 2-(nicotinamide)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (TGN-020), a specific AQP4 inhibitor, or vehicle. Rats underwent T2-weighted and T2* gradient-echo magnetic resonance imaging to assess lateral ventricular volume and intraventricular iron deposition at 7, 14, and 28 days after intraventricular injection and were then euthanized. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, western blot analysis, and immunofluorescence analyses were conducted on the rat brains to evaluate the expression of AQP4 at different time points. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained brain sections were obtained to assess the ventricular wall damage on day 28. RESULTS: Intraventricular injection of autologous blood caused a significant ventricular dilatation, iron deposition, and ventricular wall damage. There was increased AQP4 mRNA and protein expression in the periventricular tissue in IVH rats through day 7 to day 28. The DFX treatment group had a lower lateral ventricular volume and less intraventricular iron deposition and ventricular wall damage than the vehicle-treated group after IVH. The expression of AQP4 protein in periventricular tissue was also inhibited by DFX on days 14 and 28 after IVH. The use of TGN-020 attenuated hydrocephalus development after IVH and inhibited the expression of AQP4 protein in the periventricular tissue between day 14 and day 28 without a significant effect on intraventricular iron deposition or ventricular wall damage. CONCLUSIONS: AQP4 located in the periventricular area mediated the effect of iron overload on hydrocephalus after IVH.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to compare the difference in functional scores and the incidence of complications after TKA between RA and osteoarthritis. The PubMed, MedLine, The Cochrane Library, Embase and Web of Science databases were searched for all clinical studies up to 15 March 2023 comparing outcomes after total knee replacement in patients with RA and OA, with two review authors independently screening the literature. A total of 7,820,115 (knee-counted) cases were included in 34 studies. The results of meta-analysis showed that the scores of the RA group were lower than that of the osteoarthritis group in the postoperative knee joint score [MD=-2.72,95%CI(-5.06,-0.38),P=0.02] and the postoperative knee joint function score [MD=-11.47,95%CI(-16.55,-6.39),P<0.00001], and the difference was statistically significant. The incidence of deep venous thrombosis (OR=0.84,95%CI(0.79,0.90),P<0.00001) and pulmonary embolism (OR=0.84,95%CI(0.78,0.91),P<0.00001) were significantly lower in RA than in osteoarthritis (P<0.00001). Compared with patients with osteoarthritis, patients with rheumatoid arthritis have lower knee society scores and functional scores after total knee arthroplasty, and a higher risk of prosthetic infection, loosening, and revision, but TKA can still effectively reduce pain in RA patients, Improve function and quality of life without increasing the risk of lower extremity venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Therefore, total knee replacement can be used as a treatment option for patients with rheumatoid arthritis who have not responded to conservative treatment. Patients should fully understand the benefits and possible risks of total knee replacement and develop an individualized treatment plan.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence suggests that there is an association between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the causal relationship between RA and AD remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between RA and AD. METHODS: Using publicly available genome-wide association study datasets, bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) was performed using the inverse-variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR‒Egger regression, simple mode, and weighted mode methods. RESULTS: The results of MR for the causal effect of RA on AD (IVW, odds ratio [OR] = 0.959, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.941-0.978, P = 2.752E-05; weighted median, OR = 0.960, 95% CI: 0.937-0.984, P = 0.001) revealed a causal association between genetic susceptibility to RA and an increased risk of AD. The results of MR for the causal effect of AD on RA (IVW, OR = 0.978, 95% CI: 0.906-1.056, P = 0.576; weighted median, OR = 0.966, 95% CI: 0.894-1.043, P = 0.382) indicated that there was no causal association between genetic susceptibility to AD and an increased risk of RA. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this two-way two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis revealed a causal association between genetic susceptibility to RA and a reduced risk of AD but did not reveal a causal association between genetic susceptibility to AD and an increased or reduced risk of RA.

RESUMO

Colonic epithelial damage and dysregulated immune response are crucial factors in the progression and exacerbation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Nanoenabled targeted drug delivery to the inflamed intestinal mucosa has shown promise in inducing and maintaining colitis remission, while minimizing side effects. Inspired by the excellent antioxidative and anti-inflammatory efficacy of naturally derived magnolol (Mag) and gut homeostasis regulation of microbiota-derived butyrate, we developed a pH/redox dual-responsive butyrate-rich polymer nanoparticle (PSBA) as an oral Mag delivery system for combinational therapy of IBD. PSBA showed a high butyrate content of 22% and effectively encapsulated Mag. The Mag-loaded nanoparticles (PSBA@Mag) demonstrated colonic pH and reduction-responsive drug release, ensuring efficient retention and adhesion in the colon of colitis mice. PSBA@Mag not only normalized the level of reactive oxygen species and inflammatory effectors in inflamed colonic mucosa but also restored the epithelial barrier function in both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease mouse models. Importantly, PSBA promoted the migration and healing ability of intestinal epithelial cells in vitro and in vivo, sensitizing the therapeutic efficacy of Mag in animal models. Moreover, transcriptomics and metabolism analyses revealed that PSBA@Mag mitigated inflammation by suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and restoring the lipid metabolism. Additionally, this nanomedicine modulated the gut microbiota by inhibiting pathogenic Proteus and Escherichia-Shigella and promoting the proliferation of beneficial probiotics, including Lachnoclostridium, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group and norank_f_Ruminococcaceae. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of butyrate-functionalized polymethacrylates as versatile and effective nanoplatforms for colonic drug delivery and mucosa repair in combating IBD and other gastrointestinal disorders.

RESUMO

Developing a multifunctional hydrogel wound dressing with good injectability, self-healing, tissue adhesion, biocompatibility, and fast skin wound healing efficiency remains challenging. In this work, an injectable adhesive dopamine-functionalized oxidized hyaluronic acid/carboxymethyl chitosan/collagen (AHADA/CCS/Col) hydrogel was constructed. The Schiff dynamic bond between AHADA and CCS, the N-Ag-N bond between CCS and Ag ions, and the S-Ag-S dynamic bond between sulfhydryl-modified collagen (ColSH) and Ag ions allowed the hydrogel to be both injectable and self-healing. Moreover, the aldehyde groups and catechol groups presented in the hydrogel could generate force with several groups on the tissue interface; therefore, the hydrogel also had good tissue adhesion. In vitro experiments proved that this hydrogel exhibited good biocompatibility and could promote cell proliferation. Additionally, curcumin (Cur)-loaded gelatin nanoparticles (Cur@Gel NPs) were prepared, which could respond to matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and controllably release Cur to hasten wound healing efficiency. Animal experiment results showed that this AHADA/CCS/Col hydrogel loaded with Cur@Gel NPs promoted wound repairing better, indicating its potential as a wound dressing.

RESUMO

Background: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a strong independent predictor of poor outcomes. Although the location and volume of ICH are associated with IVH, our knowledge concerning the mechanism of IVH after ICH is still limited. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between hematoma morphology and IVH in patients with supratentorial deep ICH. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed adult patients (aged ≥18 years) with spontaneous supratentorial deep ICH who underwent computed tomography (CT) within 48 h after ICH symptom onset in Peking University First Hospital between January 2017 and August 2022. We collected the clinical and imaging data of the patients and assessed hematoma morphology using several quantitative radiological parameters including hematoma volume, sphericity index, A/B ratio (A: the largest area of hematoma; B: the largest diameter 90° to A on the same slice), and our newly proposed largest diameter-midline angle (LMA). Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between these parameters and the presence of IVH on the initial CT scan. Results: Among 114 patients with spontaneous supratentorial deep ICH, 41 (36.0%) had IVH. In patients with IVH, the sphericity index was lower than that in individuals without IVH, while the LMA was larger. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that sphericity index [0.1-unit odds ratio (OR) =0.252; 95% CI: 0.089-0.709; P=0.009] and the LMA (10-unit OR =1.281; 95% CI: 1.007-1.630; P=0.04) were independently associated with the presence of IVH in patients with supratentorial deep ICH. Univariate analyses showed that hematoma volume, A/B ratio, sphericity index, and the LMA were significantly associated with poor outcomes at discharge. Conclusions: Two quantitative parameters of hematoma morphology, sphericity index and the LMA, were significantly associated with the presence of IVH in patients with supratentorial deep ICH. Further prospective studies with larger sample sizes are needed to validate our results.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the clinical safety and efficacy of the direct superior approach and the conventional surgical approach. DATE SOURCES: From PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and China Knowledge Network up to January 30, 2023. MAIN RESULTS: A total of 7 case series involving 4306 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty were included, including 679 patients with direct superior approach. All outcome measures: Oxford Hip Score [MD = 0.30, 95% CI (- 0.87, 1.47), P = 0.62], Hip Harris Score [MD = - 0.18, 95% CI (- 0.86, 0.49), P = 0.59], intraoperative blood loss [MD = - 54.14, 95% CI (- 102.75,-5.52), P = 0.03], transfusion rate [MD = 0.49, 95% CI (0.29, 0.83), P = 0.008], Limb Length Differences [MD = - 0.21, 95% CI (0.02, 0.39), P = 0.03], Length of Stay [MD = - 0.61, 95% CI (- 0.69, - 0.52), P < 0.00001]. CONCLUSIONS: The DSA was superior to conventional access in terms of incision length, bleeding, postoperative transfusion rate, and early postoperative HHS. In addition, our study found that because the DSA has less tissue damage, it has the potential advantages of accelerating patient recovery after surgery, shortening hospitalization time, and reducing patient economic pressure, which can significantly improve patient quality of life and satisfaction.

RESUMO

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease that ultimately leads to joint deformity. The pathogenesis of OA is believed to involve abnormal chondrocyte death, with ferroptosis serving a key role in chondrocyte damage. The present study investigated whether acetyl zingerone (AZ), a newly identified antioxidant derived from curcumin, can alleviate the progression of OA. To investigate this, the present study performed various experiments, including crystal violet staining, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence and western blot analysis. In addition, dual validation was performed using in vivo and in vitro experiments; a mouse OA model was constructed for the in vivo experiments, and chondrocytes were used for the in vitro experiments. Destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) surgery was performed to establish an OA model in mice and IL1ß was used to induce an OA model in vitro. The results indicated that AZ may promote chondrocyte viability and the expression of extracellular matrix components. Furthermore, AZ reduced the occurrence of ferroptosis by promoting the expression of glutathione peroxidase 4, inhibiting cartilage destruction and osteophyte formation, and alleviating damage to articular cartilage caused by DMM surgery. Mechanistically, the activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2related factor 2 and heme oxygenase1 may be responsible for the antiferroptosis effects of AZ on chondrocytes. These findings indicated that AZ may be considered a promising candidate for OA therapy.

RESUMO

To achieve accurate selection and synchronous imaging of blood vessels and lymph, a speckle spectrum contrast method (SSC) based on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is proposed in this Letter. In this method, the time-lapse optical coherence tomography (OCT) intensity signal is transformed to the Fourier frequency domain. By analyzing the frequency spectrum of the time-lapse OCT intensity signal, a parameter called SSC signal, which represents the ratio of different intervals of the high frequency to the low frequency, is utilized to extract and contrast different types of the vessels in the biological tissues. In the SSC spectrum, the SSC signals of the static tissue, lymphatic vessels, and vascular vessels can be separated in three different frequency intervals, enabling differentiation and synchronous imaging of the lymphatic-vascular vessels. A mouse ear was used to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of this method. By using the SSC signal as the imaging parameter, the lymphatic and blood vessels of the mouse ear are differentiated and visualized simultaneously. This study shows the feasibility of the three-dimensional (3D) synchronous angio-lymphography based on the SSC method, which provides a tool to improve the understanding for disease research and treatment.

RESUMO

The use of the electro-Fenton process to continuously generate H2O2 and efficiently degrade organic pollutants is considered a promising technology. The ratio of generation of H2O2 is usually regarded as the critical step; however, how the H2O2 is utilized is also of particular importance. Herein, activated carbon was activated at different temperatures and used to explore the effect of nitrogen doping on the production and utilization of H2O2 in the electro-Fenton-based degradation of organic pollutants. The experimental results indicate that nitrogen-doped activated carbon simultaneously promotes the generation and utilization of H2O2, which is attributed to the regulation of the competition between phenol and O2 adsorption by the doped nitrogen. Nitrogen doping not only improves 2e-ORR selectivity but also aggregates phenol near the cathode to balance the concentrations of phenol and ·OH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirmed that pyrrole-N as a dopant promoted the adsorption of phenol, while pyridine-N was more favorable for O2 adsorption. The unique balance of nitrogen types possessed by modified activated carbon NAC-750 permits the efficient synergistic generation and utilization of H2O2 in a balanced manner during the degradation of phenol. This work provides a new direction for the rational nitrogen-doping modification of activated carbon for the electro-Fenton-based degradation of organic pollutants.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: With the increasing prevalence of osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, total joint replacement, the end-stage treatment, provides pain relief and restoration of function, but is often associated with massive blood loss. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has been reported to reduce perioperative blood loss in hip or knee arthroplasty. However, the optimal dose of TXA administration remains controversial. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis combining data from 5 trials comparing the efficacy and safety of one fixed dose of 1 g intravenously administered TXA with two doses of 1 g each administered intravenously for hip or knee arthroplasty. METHODS: PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library were searched from January 2000 to February 2023. Our meta-analysis included randomized controlled trials and cohort studies comparing the efficacy and safety of different doses of intravenous TXA (IV-TXA) for THA or TKA. The observation endpoints included total blood loss, postoperative hemoglobin drop, blood transfusion rate, length of hospital stay, incidence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT), and incidence of pulmonary embolism (PE). Meta-analysis was performed according to Cochrane's guidelines and PRISMA statement. The Danish RevMan5.3 software was used for data merging. RESULTS: Five cohort studies involving 5542 patients met the inclusion criteria. Our meta-analysis showed that the two groups were significantly higher in total blood loss (mean difference (MD) = - 65.60, 95% confidence interval (CI) [- 131.46, 0.26], P = 0.05); blood transfusion rate (risk difference (RD) = 0.00, 95% CI [- 0.01, 0.02], P = 0.55); postoperative hemoglobin (MD = 0.02, 95% CI [- 0.09, 0.13], P = 0.31); postoperative hospital stay days (MD = - 0.13), 95% CI [- 0.35, 0.09], P = 0.25); DVT (RD = 0.00, 95% CI [- 0.00, 0.01], P = 0.67); PE (RD = 0.00, 95% CI [- 0.01, 0.00], P = 0.79). There was some inherent heterogeneity due to variance in sample size across each major study. CONCLUSION: 1 dose of 1 g and 2 doses of 1 g IV-TXA each time have similar effects on reducing blood loss, blood transfusion rate, postoperative hemoglobin level, and postoperative hospital stay after TKA or THA, without increasing the risk of postoperative complications risk. For patients at high risk of thromboembolic events, one dose of 1 g TXA throughout surgery may be preferred. However, higher-quality RCT is needed to explore the optimal protocol dose to recommend the widespread use of TXA in total joint arthroplasty. Trial registration We conducted literature selection, eligibility criteria evaluation, data extraction and analysis on the research program registered in Prospero (CRD42023405387) on March 16, 2023.
